How to burn 800 calories in 30 minutes

1. I had a 7-mile run on the schedule that I was supposed to do yesterday but put off because of other obligations. Then today, I slept in and at 4:45, when I got out of work … it was so hot. In the 90s, still.

But I had some time before sundown and I have some other things I’m training for — another century on August 5 — so I got on the bike and headed out to Range Pond State Park. It’s an 11 mile trip from the house.

I got there, put my $5 in the pay slot, swam a quick two laps around the swimming area, then biked home. A 22-mile ride and a two-thirds mile swim. Much nicer than suffering through a run. I did it by myself, maybe not the safest thing to do, but it felt really good and really important before I go on a camping trip with Tony and my brother and sister this weekend.

2. I’ve tried to be more flexible with the marathon training schedule this time around, comme ca. My hope is to be fit enough to finish, again. I don’t feel motivated to put in the miles to push my pace to the next level. I don’t want to sacrifice life and other sports and spending time outside.

I fear that in the long run (har har), skipping these runs might not be best for me, but I don’t care. I went out and worked out an hour longer than I would have if I ran. And burned more calories.

And not like that. 😉

3. Did I mention we’re going on a camping trip this weekend? I’m excited. We’re headed to Cobscook Bay State Park in Cutler, in Washington County. The most beautiful place in the world, except for maybe Arizona, but this is closer.

I am simultaneously really excited and a little nervous about pulling off this weekend’s 14-miler in a new place. Fortunately I’ll have my sister along with me for part of it. 😉

4. So, random (that’s what these posts usually are.):

Spring mix is amazing.

I used to hate making salads. I was not a salad person. This is because I thought that you had to buy heads of romaine lettuce and cut that up and eat the nasty spines and … yeah. Spring mix makes salads tasty again.

I swear I have had a salad for like, 6 of the past 12 days. Mmmm, summer.
